KITING IN GREECE

The Greek gods blessed Greece and its islands with abundance of wind, idyllic blue water and comfy temperatures. There are many places you can kite, so we made a selection of the most popular spots.

SPOTS AND ISLANDS

The islands are widely spread: We can distinguish 2 regions, with each different wind characteristics…

In the Ionian Sea towards the west side of Greece archipelago, we find the islands of Lekfada and Corfu. North West thermal winds pick up around noon and blow an average of 18 -22 knots for the rest of the day.

The Aegean Sea, closer to Turkey at the east of the archipelago. At the islands Lemnos, Rhodes and Crete the so called Meltemi wind can blow day and night non stop. Naxos and Paros have a few super nice bays with kite infrastructure and amazing conditions, especially during the summer months.

For beginners we recommend to stick to the bigger islands. Marmari is a great option, on the Evia peninsula. Marmari is amongst the best destinations in Greece when it comes to reliable wind thanks to the mountains that create a venturi effect and the meltemi wind.

If you are keen on exploring the most out of your trip and you have basic kite skills, try out a few days on a kite cruise that will take you off the beaten path.

The best months to go are June to September – warm weather, no wetsuit needed, and good wind probability. Bring also smaller kite sizes because it can often pick up to 30 knots.

WIND, WEATHER AND WATER

Expect overall great conditions from june till september with 15 – 25 knot average with high wind peaks in summer. The seasonal north / westerly wind can refresh the warmer summer days on land making it comfy both on and off the water. Boardshoarts and bikini s will do the job for most kiters.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Greece has a big history in tourism and on the more popular islands you will find many activities beside kitesurfing. The food is amazing and cheap.

Accommodation options are plenty with local guest houses up to larger hotels on the bigger islands. You are still on EU territory with good standard health care, safety etc.

Season: May | June | July | August | September | October
