KITING IN ESSAOUIRA – MAROCCO

Essaouira,  the Tarifa of Marocco, has lots of history in Kitesurf and windsurf.

The north eastern trade winds blow steady and very reliable except maybe the winter months when it calms down a bit and sometimes get wind from the south. In summer the wind intensifies and it can blow up to 40 knots, so bring small kites.  There is a large bay with much space and reasonable flat water and good ramps on the waves outside. It can get a bit more gusty closer to town than further down the bay. If you get bored in the bay there here are many other kite options in a pretty close radius from town.

There is a playground for all levels and disciplines, from beginner to advanced, and freestyle to wave riding. There are numerous famous and popular wavespots around like for example Moulay. During the winter months the waves get usually bigger than in summer.

If you like to go on downwinders you can as well. Pick ups can be organized at some kiteschools.

WIND, WATER AND WATER

Expect great conditions from march till september with 15 – 25 knot average and high wind peaks in summer. The north / northeasterly atlantic wind can get chilly on and off the water!  The currents bring colder water from the North so bring a wetsuit for water temp around 17 – 20 C.  Air temperatures are comfy in spring and autumn and very warm in the summer (when you’re sheltered from wind).

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Essaouira still has its authentic arab flavour with the medina and historic center that attracts not just kitesurf tourism. The market and the fishing harbour are a must see.

Accommodation is fairly cheap and there are many options. You can book your stay in an authentic riad or choose out of hotels, guest houses and apartments around it. Everything is very close so you don t need a car to get around.

There are plenty of affordable restaurants on the beach and around town, with traditional cuisine or seafood, or other international options.

Essaouira’s has some bars but no big clubs. And even though religion in Marrocco is Islam, you can buy beer in the super market.

As for other sporty activities, you can go supping or surfing for example. You can rent a montain bike, go quad biking, and even camel riding.
